Self-guided Game Drive at Augrabies Falls National Park

African Game Drive at Augrabies Falls National Park (Video)

We’ve been in Africa for about two months now and we’re absolutely loving it. Overlanding in South Africa is pretty posh. There is so much infrastructure available and the campgrounds are, on average, way nicer that what we’d see in the United States. In our latest video, we roll into a new experience at Augrabies Falls National Park. It really feels like we’re in Africa now!

Watch now:

Here is a map showing where we are:

  • Augrabies Falls National Park

Augrabies Falls National Park

There are several things to do at Augrabies Falls National Park. You could do most of them in one very full day, but we recommend at least two days. Especially when the temperature is high, it’s good to pace yourself.

From the visitor center, you can take a short hike to see the majestic and powerful falls. It’s been a wet rainy season, so the falls were running very high during our visit.

There are several hiking trails. We chose the 8-kilometer Dassie Trail and saw a variety of wildlife, including baboons, rock hyrax (“dassies”), and klipspringers. The scenery is gorgeous. You must start first thing, though. Well before 9 a.m., we were absolutely melting.

Then there’s the self-guided game drive! This was the highlight of our visit. It took about four hours for us to complete the loop, including many stops to watch the animals. The trail is no problem for 4×4 vehicles with high clearance. Actually, 4×4 capability is required by park authorities to complete the whole loop. We won’t spoil it by telling you what we saw…it was incredible.

Camping

We camped at Khamkirri, which is located about an hour from the national park. If you need quick access to the park for early morning entry (like us on the day of our hike), then Kameeldoring is an option. It’s just outside the park gates. There is also a campground right inside the national park. We didn’t stay there because of trouble with the baboons and vervet monkeys, but many people do camp there.

Khamkirri provided one of our favorite campground experiences in Africa so far. We didn’t want to leave!

Augrabies Falls National Park is our last major stop before we cross our first African border–into Namibia!

Thanks for joining us as we drive around the world.
