When we entered Peru in the north and were shocked by our first exposure to the dusty, trashy coastline, our Pan-American Highway friends told us, “Just wait until you get to southern Peru.” They told us the bottom part of the country was the most beautiful and interesting. Well, it’s fair to say we’ve arrived, and you’ll get to see what we’ve seen in our latest video.
Leaving the Pacific coast, we go inland to the colonial city of Arequipa. We spend nearly two weeks wandering the cobblestone streets and soaking up the stunning architecture. Our new friend, Mario, takes us on a tour of the cathedral museum, a 1700s-era “house,” and even interesting back alleys. Eric also tours the unbelievable Santa Catalina Monastery in Arequipa, where nuns have lived continuously since 1580. 😮

It’s not all fun stuff, though. Caspian gets incredibly sick–maybe the sickest he’s ever been. It all starts in the Jeep in the middle of the night during a bout of rain, so it takes us a few days to get our lives sorted again. During the unanticipated down-time, Eric tackles important Jeep maintenance.

And, as always, we share driving footage along the way. We hit our all-time altitude record!
What’s new with Hourless Life?
We are spending one last week in Cusco. So far, we’ve toured several Spanish colonial buildings, the popular art museum, and Qorikancha/Coricancha, the most important site in Incan civilization. We still have two Incan ruins we hope to see before leaving the area. For our patrons on Marco Polo, be watching for real-time video this week!
From Cusco, we’re driving west to Ollantaytambo. On March 17, we visit Machu Picchu! With time running short on our Peru visa, we need to make tracks to a few more special locations, before making a dash for the Chilean border.
Thank you for joining us on this journey.
