We drove 1,132 of the 1,240 kilometers that make up Chile’s famous Carretera Austral. It was all the things: wild, remote, gorgeous, unique, challenging. But here’s the thing: the bottom of the Carretera Austral is a dead end. In our latest video, we scramble to get on the ferry at Caleta Yungay. But we don’t have tickets.
Watch now:
The bottom of the Carretera Austral is the little town of O’Higgins. From there, everyone has to drive back north and either:
A) Catch the multi-day ferry from Caleta Yungay to Puerto Natales, or
B) Drive way back north to Chile Chico, cross the border into Argentina, and drive 1,500 kilometers south to Puerto Natales
The ferry option saves major time and fuel costs, plus wear-and-tear on your vehicle (the road is very rough in places).
Unfortunately, when we went to check for ferry tickets in mid-January, it was sold out all the way to mid-March. We didn’t know exactly when we would get to Caleta Yungay, but it ended up being at the end of January. What to do?
We show how it all turned out in the video.
What’s new with Hourless Life?
I’m writing this from the Houston airport. We’re on our way to Seattle for 10 days to visit family. This is our first time in the U.S. in more than a year. Our eldest son is currently stationed in Seattle with the U.S. Coast Guard. He and his wife just gave us our first granddaughter! We can’t wait to meet her.
Then it’s back to Mexico for one more month.
