Off Namibia’s northeastern corner, a thin strip of land juts out. It’s known as the Caprivi Strip. The centerpiece of this region is the sparkling Kavango River (called the Okavango River when it crosses the border into Botswana). The river gives life to the whole area, creating a vibrant ecosystem that leaves an impression on every visitor.
In this video, we camp at six campgrounds on the river! We can’t get enough, taking a boat tour that takes us up close to pods of hippos, crocodiles, and colorful bird species. We also do a game drive through Mahongo Core, and we can’t believe how many animals populate this small area.
It’s a special season as we celebrate Eric’s birthday. But just a few hours after his birthday dinner, Brittany woke up with body-wracking chills. For the first time in Africa, we took out a malaria test kit.

This video marks the end of our three months in Namibia. When we entered at the southern border, we had no idea we’d spend so long in this country. We saw Africa’s largest canyon and a ghost town buried in sand, Caspian climbed a giant sand dune alone, we raced the tide at Sandwich Harbor, and Etosha National Park blew our minds with our first sightings of elephants and rhinos.
Seriously, what other country can deliver so much?
But since we only have a year overlanding Africa during our drive around the world, it’s time to move to our next country. In this video, we show our border crossing into Botswana. Does it match what you’d expect?
I know this is hard to believe with everything we’ve just said about Namibia, but Botswana is going to be our biggest adventure yet. Ready or not, here we come.
