We are just loving our time in Namibia. I didn’t expect us to use our full 90-day visa. But it looks like we’ll be eking out every day we can get, exploring this country from bottom to top.
In our latest video, a dream experience lands in our laps. We are invited to tour the infamous Sandwich Harbor, where a narrow stretch of beach separates high sand dunes from the Atlantic Ocean. There is only a three-hour window to safely get out and back, before the sea covers the escape route.
Watch now:
Leaving Swakopmund after 24 days, we make our way north. We stop at a bush camp next to a dry river bed, a remote area full of animals signs and sounds. Then we visit the Cheetah Conservancy Fund to learn how cheetahs are slowly recovering from near extinction in Namibia. After a few nights at a peaceful vineyard, our long-awaited reservation date is finally here. We are heading into Etosha National Park!
Fuel is quite expensive right now, as it is all over the world. We usually spend $100-120 USD every time we visit the gas station. This is nearly our daily budget! So we are trying to drive less overall by choosing our destinations carefully and staying longer in each place.
At first it felt like we’d be missing out on a lot of places. But actually, the pace has seemed really healthy. And by putting thought into where we visit, I think we can appreciate each experience that much more.
ICYMI: Patreon posts
We’ve had a couple of long-form posts over on Patreon recently. In a public post, I shared “How an Hourless Life Video Gets Made.” You might be shocked!
In another post for patrons only, I shared the story of my first Africa market visit, which I went into solo. I explain why I waited so long to visit an Africa market and the chaos that ensued.
What we’re reading
I’m reading six books right now, not including what I’m reading to Caspian. Two of the books I’m studying with friends. One I’m reading aloud to Eric. It might be out of control at this point.
I’ll recommend two right now:
- The Immeasurable World: Journeys in Desert Places, by William Atkins. This is a beautiful, modern day tour of the world’s deserts, with discussion of their first explorers, cultural history, and who lives there now. Reading inspired by our recent time in the Namib Desert!
- The Shadow of the Sun, by Ryszard Kapuscinski. The first Polish journalist assigned to a post in Africa, Kapuscinski shares his time in Africa beginning in 1957 as colonialism began to crumble. Fascinating insight to a poignant time in history.
I know I don’t normally share these things here, but hopefully they’ll be interesting or helpful to some of you!
We are already super excited about our next YouTube video, which will share our mind-blowing four days in Etosha National Park.
Thanks for joining us on this journey.
