Overlanding to Yumbilla Falls and Chachapoyas in Peru

Overlanding to the Fifth Tallest Waterfall in the World (Video)

In our last video, we endured rain, mud, and car sickness to reach a remote border crossing between Ecuador and Peru. Now it’s time to explore a new country!

  • San Ignacio
  • Bagua Grande
  • Cuispes
  • Chachapoyas

In our latest video, see parts of northern Peru rarely visited by tourists, including the areas around San Ignacio and Bagua Grande. We are far east of the Pan-American Highway that follows the coast of Peru.

We climb a mountain in our Jeep to reach a trailhead at the end of a dirt road. Brittany and Caspian hike in and confront the fifth tallest waterfall in the whole world. Yumbilla Falls wasn’t surveyed until 2007. But when the National Geographic Institute of Peru measured, they found out the falls were 2,938 ft/895.5 m tall–over half a mile tall and significantly taller than neighboring Gocta Falls, a popular tourist site.

Yumbilla Falls remains remote and quiet. When we arrived at the base of the top tier, we were the only ones there. What a humbling experience.

This video concludes in the quaint town of Chachapoyas, founded in 1538.

What’s new?

In real-time, our visit back to the United States is nearly over. We tackled the long drive from Corpus Christi, Texas, to central California. Our daughter hosted us at her house and we spent a few blissful days with our two grandbabies, who are 3 and 1. Our daughter organized a belated surprise birthday party for Caspian. We had all five of our kids under one roof, basically the best thing ever.

From there, we drove down to Burbank to continue the festivities. Every odd year, Brittany’s side of the family gets together for Christmas. But we messed it up in 2021. We had just crossed the border into Mexico in October, so we didn’t come back for Christmas. But finally, all of us are together again this year!

Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. We cherish you and your part in our lives. We’ll see you in the new year.
