How to Get Your Factory Jeep Build Sheet

Getting Your Jeep Factory Build Sheet

Is it Possible to Get Your Factory Jeep Build Sheet?

The short answer to getting your Jeep build sheet is yes if your Jeep was built 1998 or later, and “possibly” if your Jeep was built prior to 1998

I spoke with FCA North America (The corporate folks at Jeep) to get to the bottom of the Jeep build sheet question. “John” at Chrysler was instrumental in helping me understand the record keeping issue and the options for Jeep owners seeing their Jeep build sheet.

Basically if your Jeep was built on or after 1998, it is pretty easy to get your Jeep build sheet and I’ll explain how in this article.

But if your Jeep was built prior to 1998 you are going to have a tougher time getting a hold of it, but there may still be hope. I’ll give those of you with older Jeeps some resources at the end of the article.

Getting a Jeep Build Sheet for Jeeps Built After 1998

For those of you in this category, it is fairly easy to get your Jeep build sheet. Here is what you do in four simple steps:

Step 1: Make sure you have your Jeep’s 17 character VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) handy.

Step 2: Go to this LINK and enter your VIN.

Step 3: Congrats, you’ve got your factory Jeep build sheet for your specific Jeep! If you used this, I’d appreciate it if you’d leave a comment and let me know. These articles are a lot of work, it is good to know that folks are using them.

Getting a Jeep Build Sheet for Jeeps Built Before 1998

Here is where it gets really challenging to find your Jeep build sheet. But we’ve heard stories from jeepers who have been successful.

Here are 2 things you can try:

Option 1: First go ahead and try the steps above. John at Chrysler told me that sometimes folks are able to get their Jeep build sheet using that method if the records were input by someone at Jeep. He explained that factory build sheets prior to 1998 are fairly obscure and yet some of them managed to make it into the system. It really depended on the vehicle and model and which sites were active prior to 1998. At that time Jeep just wasn’t keeping all of the records digitally. It wasn’t until 1998 that all Jeep build sheets were required to be input.

Option 2: Contact FCA Historical Services. This is really more for vintage vehicles, but John said that it is possible they may have build sheets for Jeeps built prior to 1998 and that he had heard of some success stories in finding them through that method.

If you contact them, make sure you let them know you are looking for your factory Jeep build sheet and provide them with the 17 character VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of your Jeep.

Here is the contact info for FCA Historical Services:

How to Get Your Factory Jeep Build Sheet Summary

The Jeep build sheet is what your Jeep rolled off the factory floor with. By now I’m sure you’ve probably modded it out as most of us have. However if you are looking for mods for your Jeep, here are some Jeep mods that I felt were worth writing articles about.

Also if you aren’t part of a Jeep club I suggest you join one. So much help from so many Jeepers all over the nation. To learn more about other Jeep Clubs and Groups that I’ve written about click here!

And if you liked this article, please consider giving our new platform Hourless Life a like/follow on Facebook, Instagram and/or Twitter.

Whether or not you are getting some Jeep mods, the original Jeep build sheet is always a good thing to have in your Jeep records.

I hope this was helpful to you. If any of you find your build sheet prior to 1998, I’d love to hear about it.

Regardless, if you used this article to help you find your build sheet, I’d appreciate it if you’d leave me a comment. These articles are a lot of work and it is good to know they are helping my fellow jeepers.

Until next time, keep it dirty and wheels side down.

Happy to do it Kurt. The good thing is that “John” at Chrysler really took his time in talking me through the steps. I didn’t feel rushed and he answered all my questions. We had a good conversation and I learned quite a bit in the process. I’ll be curious to see if any Jeep owners prior to 1998 are able to get their Jeep build sheet.

We got the buildsheet for our 2001 jeep cherokee but remote keyless entry is listed under optional so it still doesn’t tell me if our jeep can have the key fob programmed or not. We have to pay to have it activated even if it doesn’t work unfortunately. Any suggestions?

I just wanted to let you know that we have a 1994 & 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I wanted to look at the build sheet. We were successfully able to get build sheets for both Jeep AND the 1997, 1995, and 1990 Dodge Rams that I entered in just for curiosity’s sake… Thanks!

I contacted an online agent via chat on the Jeep site and the agent said they no longer are doing it that way and to request it via email under contact and it will arrive in 2 – 5 days. I’m going to try again in a day or so anyway but wanted to let all know what I got when I tried. Thanks for the awesome post!

I recently got the exact same response from Danielle regarding my 86 XJ. So she’s been using the same cut and paste reply for over 5 years! I chuckled a little when I read that – it is not actually correct. All records were “passed onto Chrysler from AMC,” as Chrysler simply assumed AMC’s operations after the acquisition. The issue is more likely that nobody from Chrysler thought to consolidate/preserve the records. Who knows, they could still be sitting in some building somewhere today.

WOW! Just for giggles I entered the VIN for my ’92 YJ and got an error. I checked my VIN and tried a second time, to my shock it came up, (with a working PDF for download too)! Some details are missing and a couple are just altogether incorrect, (IE it says my Jeep came with Power Rack and Pinion steering and none of the YJ’s had R&P, maybe it was the only thing they could choose for Power Steering in that category??) BUT it did provided me with a great deal of info about my Jeep I never imagined I could acquire.

Thanks so much for putting this together!

Ran through the steps for my 2000 TJ Sahara, not 100% sure how to interpret all of the information e.g. it lists both a hardtop and soft top and maybe some confusion on a couple of other items, but hey that’s not on you. Also for your readers, stop by your local Jeep dealer, they should be able to print out a Vehicle Information Report from the STARPARTS Network

    Again, good job

Yeah they can be a bit confusing. I know that some came with both off the factory. Meaning that they had the hard top and a soft top that was shoved in the cargo area. That may have been it. ~ Jeepsies

Thanks! I just pulled a very generic build sheet for my 89 Jeep Wrangler right from your initial steps. So I must have got lucky. Many lines are just filled in with generic words, ie, must be missing a lot of information.

However, it doesn’t really tell me anything technical, ie, it states a 5 sp manual trans, but not telling me which one. So it solves some curiosities and is very interesting. Such as, not a lot of my Jeep is original. Not a big surprise. More detail is necessary and would be awesome for a wrench guy like my self.

Let me know if you can help me find more details. Thanks for this help. And thanks for any additional help. Feel free to use my email, not sure if/how I’ll find this particular site again. Lol

Thank you! This article was a lifesaver.I just purchased a brand new 2017 JGC that had been passed between dealerships where the Window Sticker had been misplaced along the way. It had loads of options but until I found your article it was near-impossible to identify by name all that Luxury Group II included. As well, as other more innocuous features. Thanks again Eric!

Wow! It’s definitely cool and maybe even a little scary that my specific Jeep’s build info is there. It took me back to the weeks researching and choosing just what I wanted as well as learning how to buy a vehicle on my own without getting ripped off (I am a girl and young 20’s when I bought it). It basically came down to knowing everything about it and what everything was worth. I even told them not to put the dealer marketing on it because I wasn’t going to pay a fee for them to brand it with their own stickers and plate holder. lol … this Jeep is still my baby and it runs as well now as it did day-one.

Thank you for the work you put into this article. I loved it.

    Hi,
-92 4.0 XJ built sheet came up with that application.
This car is in Finland/Europe and drives to nice backback trips on weekends. If goes broken, I’ll buy another XJ again. Thanks for this help.

Thanks for this! I recently got a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. No door jam sticker/manual. The tires on it were TERRIBLE. Went on the web to ballpark some pricing and kept getting back 17″. I got all confused, someone had gotten 16″ jeep rims from a different vehicle, This information gave me a way of figuring out exactly what the Jeep came with from the factory!

I used this to search the Vin of my 94 YJ 1J4FY49S2RP123456 (the last six digits are replaced) and it returned me a build sheet that correctly indicates the Sahara trim level, leather steering wheel, and add-a-trunk, among the other options. So it looks like it did the job. I hope its correct about the 3.55 axle ratio and the anti-spin rear diff.

    Thank you!!

I have a 2016 JGC Overland diesel with 2 VINS on the Window Sticker – One states a 2016 build and the other, a 2015 build. The VIN in the lower left (normal spot) is the 2016 and the VIN that sits in the optional equipment section states a 2015 vehicle – similar but not exact to the 2016. I downloaded the build sheets for both and the 2016 states (test vehicle. Any idea what this could be about? I can send you both VINs if you want to look. thank you

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. After having the ’00 Cherokee I just bought for a week, I started noticing some unusual parts, on top of the fact it looked slightly taller than others for some reason. Ran the VIN, and it was ordered with the UpCountry suspension package — skid plates, upgraded shocks & springs, 3.55 Trac-Loc, etc. Pretty neat! Ran the VIN on our ’14 Cherokee Trailhawk as well for kicks. Just cool to be able to have that info.

I bought it used and have not been able to get a copy of the window sticker. It appears that 2013 models and new are available but not 2012 and earlier.

    Thanks again.

It had the build sheet for my ’95 Wrangler SE (that I bought new in August ’95), with a couple of inaccuracies (no, it did *not* come with “P265/60r18 BSW A/S All Terrain Tires” on the factory 15″ 5-spoke rims, or an Alcantara Wrap Steering Wheel), but overall – wow! Thanks!

I just pulled up a Build Sheet on a 2014 Cherokee Limited 4X4 for sale on kbb. The spec sheet on kbb lists the vehicle as having the “Luxury Group” option. The LG option is supposed to include the memory seat for the driver and cooled front seats for driver and passenger. The build sheet on the Jeep website, though, lists the memory seat, but not the cooled seats. Aren’t those both part of the Luxury Group option? Is there an error on the build sheet?

I have a question regarding the Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, both the Ecodiesel and gas-powered versions, years 2015-2016-2017.

Is it a simple matter to check transmission fluid condition and level? Or is the system sealed? If it’sealed, it’s a far more complicated and time-consuming process. Thank you.

I tried the VIN for both my brother’s 1998 XJ Limited 4.0 and my 2000 XJ Orvis 4.0, both UK vehicles.

His VIN works fine but mine just returns “Unable to fetch required information. Please contact System

The link and Build Sheet steps still work. Just got the sheet for my 2016 Patriot. Mechanic listed my transmission as a CVT instead of 6Speed Automatic which really worried me. I did not want a CVT and understood the vehicle I bought had a 6Speed Auto, but there was nothing in the five year old paperwork that mentioned anything about the engine or anything else. I’ve not got saved and printed copies of all the details, and feel much better about it. And, yes, the Build Sheet does say show it’s a 6Speed Automatic rather than a CVT.
