Surrounded on all sides by towering sand dunes, we camp next to a startling oasis. Our Cessna aircraft takes flight, allowing us to soar over the mysterious Nazca Lines. Created around 500 A.D., spiral paths lead us down to aqueducts still in use after 1,500 years.
Which of these sentences should begin our story? They’re all true. We have had a thrilling past month exploring the wonders of southern Peru and we’re excited to share with you in our latest video.
Watch now:
In this video:
- We camp in the boiling desert of Huacachina, surrounded on all sides by sand dunes. Caspian and Brittany undertake an exhausting (but rewarding) hike to the top of a dune to watch the sunset.
- In Nazca, we fly over the legendary Nazca Lines, learning about the ancient people who made them and what they might mean.
- Before leaving Nazca, we visit the Cantalloc aqueducts. These engineering wonders allowed the Nazca culture to survive in the desert. They were so well-built that they are still in use today.
- We spend two days traveling down the Pacific coast, camping where we can in a desolate area without much infrastructure. One of our camps has a stunning ocean view. The other has a llama.
What’s new?
We are in Cusco, Peru, the cradle of Incan civilization!
We got a 7th-floor Airbnb for three weeks, which is just as well because it is rainy season and rain has been falling off and on every day. It is also chilly, with highs around 62 degrees.
Whenever we get an Airbnb, we tend to work a lot on our computers and catch up on life logistics. This time around, we are doing a lot of travel planning. We need to plan the rest of our time in Peru, since we have less than a month on our visas. We’re also talking about our upcoming route through South American and 2024 trip back to the United States.
We have a Live Q&A video with our Patreon community tomorrow evening (Monday, March 4). Eric also has a podcast interview scheduled with a well-known travel show. So we are keeping busy, and also trying to leave room for exploring.
In our next video, we’ll show you the beautiful colonial city of Arequipa.
