Vacaciones? It’s a common question we get as we meet people in South America. But we aren’t on vacation. The mark of a full-time overlander is you can’t push off any tasks until later; you must incorporate them into your everyday life right now.
I’ve been on a health journey since giving birth to Caspian in 2016. I had my first surgery in 2021 before we left the U.S., thinking my problems were solved. But I needed another, much more involved surgery at the beginning of 2023 in Bogotá, Colombia. Unfortunately, I hadn’t fully recovered when I started having symptoms again. I knew I would need another surgery, this time a surgery in Argentina.
Since then, we’ve been waiting for a trifecta of circumstances to come together:
- A large enough city to find quality medical care
- A long enough visa to leave time for my recovery
- A place we want to be for an extended time, with amenities that make it easier for Eric to take care of Caspian on his own
We decided Mendoza, Argentina, could be the right place. Back in April before our U.S. visit, I met with a surgeon and made tentative plans for a hysterectomy when we returned to Argentina.
Only a week after changing continents, I went into surgery. Watch now:
So what was it like to have surgery in a foreign country? What was the quality? How much did we pay? These details and many more are in this video.
The rest of the episode is all about our month in Mendoza. It’s a special city with lots to do and see–definitely recommended.

What’s new with Hourless Life?
We’ve had an incredible past month in northeast Argentina. We spent three weeks in Buenos Aires, enjoying the sights of the city and waiting out the winter weather. About a week ago, we got back in the Jeep and started north.
So far, this leg of our journey has been full of unexpectedly marvelous experiences. We’ve camped by a river with free entrance to hot springs and a herd of capybaras wandering past. We’ve entered the pantanal (Portugese for “great swamp”), camping between a national park and provincial park with an explosion of wildlife all around us. And we’ve just entered the mission district, with ruins of Jesuit missions dating back to the early 1600’s.
And we are about to enter Brazil!
There is so much coming up on our channel, so don’t miss the next few videos.
