Our overlanding journey through southern Brazil continues in our latest video. Leaving the largest waterfalls in the world at Foz do Iguaçu, we drive east across Brazil towards the Atlantic Ocean. We experience the charming city of Curitiba, beach town of Shangrila, magical island of Ilha do Mel nearby, and stumble upon the third-largest Oktoberfest in the world in Blumenau!
Watch now:
Along the way, we make friends with two beautiful Brazilian families who are tremendously kind and helpful to us. The relationships we build as we drive around the world leave a deep impact.
We continue to navigate life in a country where we don’t speak the language. Caspian gets his first chance to play with kids who speak Portuguese and he works it out like a champ. He speaks Spanish and they seem to understand each other–more or less. Eric and I use Google Translate a lot, the best way to avoid miscommunication and get the information we need.
And we get sick, so you get a sense of what it’s like to travel full-time in a vehicle when you’re seriously under the weather. This may sound weird, but our bodies often “wait” to get sick until we’re in Airbnbs, where we can be more comfortable and recover better. But not this time. 🤒
There is a lot going on in this video!
What’s new with Hourless Life?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from our family to yours. 🥳 After celebrating Caspian’s birthday in Mendoza, Argentina, with friends, we crossed the border back into Chile. It is time for our big push to Ushuaia, known as the “End of the World.”
But first, Christmas! 🎄 We used some points to get a week-long timeshare in the lakeside town of Pucón. It was beautiful there on the lake, surrounded by green hills with snow-capped Volcán Villarica rising above us.
After Christmas in Mexico in 2021 and Colombia in 2022, this was our third Christmas outside our home country. This was the least traditional of them all, the first time we didn’t cook a big meal (because we didn’t have an oven or large/equipped kitchen in the timeshare).
But we did get a tiny “Charlie Brown” Christmas tree from a local nursery, which we decorated with a string of lights and homemade strings of Fruit Loops. And we were able to purchase Caspian’s gifts back in Brazil where there is a wide selection, so he was surprised and excited to open those. In fact, he declared it his “best Christmas ever.” So we’ll take that as a win!
We left Pucón yesterday to continue our drive south through Chile.
Thank you for being part of our journey.
